ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. –
Sydney Stewart knocked two homers to help the Saints earn two wins over Georgia Southwestern State University (GSW) on Friday afternoon at Flagler Field. Flagler finished game one after six innings at 13-5 and game two after five innings at 13-2.
Georgia Southwestern was the first on the board in game one with four runs in the top of the third. Flagler followed it right back with two runs of their own in the bottom of the third.
Hannah Smith singled to center field with one out, followed by a walk for
Cassidy Crump.
Kyla Knier reached on a fielder's choice, that advanced Crump to second and saw Smith out at third. Both runs came in on a single through the right side by
Mackenzie Smith that scored Crump and Knier scored on the throw.
The Saints tied things up in the bottom of the fourth on two runs scoring on a double to right center from
Hannah Smith. The bottom of the fifth saw four runs on one hit for Flagler.
Sydney Stewart stepped up to the plate with bases loaded and two outs. She sent a ball over the left center fence for a grand slam that scored
Paige Maseda,
Jordan Moss and
Olivia Burns to make it 8-4.
GSW added a fifth run in the top of the sixth. Five runs were added in the bottom of the sixth for the Saints to end it 13-5. Knier knocked a two-run homer down the left field line and Moss added another two-run homer of her own to make it 12-5. A double from Stewart ended the game, scoring Maseda to finish in run-rule fashion.
Madelyn Wise (6-2) picked up the win for the Saints after coming in to pitch the final three innings. She faced 13 batters and only allowed two hits.
Game two started quick with GSW scoring their first run in the top of the first with two outs. Flagler scored four of their own in the bottom of the first to take the lead. A bunt from Crump allowed Stewart to score the first run. A sacrifice fly from Knier scored
Emily Ricci and was followed by a homer from
Mackenzie Smith to score herself and Crump.
A solo homerun from Stewart in the bottom of the second saw the fifth run for the Saints. GSW added another run in the top of the third to make it 5-2 in favor of Flagler. The bottom of the fourth proved to be productive for the Saints, adding 8 runs on 6 hits and pushing their lead to 13-2. Maseda brought in the first run with an RBI double down the left field line that scored Moss. Maseda stole third and scored on a throwing error by the catcher. Two runs scored on a single from Crump, followed by an infield single from Knier that scored Burns. The final runs of the doubleheader came from a three-run homer by
Rylee Konowalchuk. The Saints defense finished it off to end the game after the top of the fifth in a run-rule.
Jordan Sheets (6-2) earned the win for the Saints after pitching the complete game.
The Saints will finish the series against Georgia Southwestern on Saturday (March 9) at 12 p.m. at Flagler Field.
