ST. AUGUSTINE – Five walks, a hit by pitch, and an error led to a six-run ninth inning as Columbus State University defeated Flagler College 8-2 in a Peach Belt Conference baseball game Friday night at Drysdale Field.
Flagler is now 8-11 overall and 2-2 in the Peach Belt. Columbus State improved to 12-9 overall and 2-2 in conference play. The same two teams meet tomorrow at 2 p.m.
After the first batter was retired in the top of the ninth, Jackson Chizek drew a walk. Cody Ferguson hit a tailor-made double play ground ball to
Mason Gray at shortstop. Gray bobbled the ball and everyone was safe. A single to left by Andrew Rubin drove in Chizek with the go-ahead run. A single to right loaded the bases and Colby Brabston was hit by a pitch to send in the insurance run. Three consecutive walks followed and by the end of the inning, the Cougars held an 8-2 lead.
A leadoff walk in the home-half of the inning was a good start for the Saints. But the next three batters were set down in order.
Leo Giannoni (4-0) got the win in relief as he tossed 2.2 scoreless innings. He walked three and struck out three.
Rubin collected three singles, scored a run, and drove in another for Columbus State. Will Johns hit two singles, scored two runs, and had one run batted in. Kole McGlumphy also finished with two singles and he scored a run.
Brad Vondruska (0-1) took the loss in relief for Flagler. He allowed four earned runs on two hits.
Daniel Fischer started and scattered eight hits in 7.1 innings. He allowed one earned run, walked four, and struck out five.
Trey Newland collected a pair of singles, scored a run, and drove in another.
Griffin Garcia finished with two singles.
