ORANGEBURG, S.C. – Flagler College racked up some big offensive numbers in a doubleheader sweep of Claflin University, 28-5 and 17-0, Saturday afternoon at Historic Mirmow Field.
Flagler improved to 15-17 overall and 8-7 in the Peach Belt. Claflin dropped to 1-30 overall and 0-15 in conference play. Flagler hosts Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University on Tuesday at 6 p.m. at Drysdale Field.
In the opener, the Saints sent 14 men to the plate and scored 10 runs on seven hits in the first inning.
Taylor Clapp belted the first of his two home runs in the game, a three-run shot, in the frame. He added another three-run shot in his next time at bat. Clapp went 4-for-4 with three runs scored, and seven runs batted in.
Riley Fitzgerald collected four singles and scored three runs.
Trey Newland finished 3-for-4 with a double, four RBI, and he scored three runs.
Jesse Sullivan hit a grand slam in the second inning and finished a triple shy of the cycle.
Caden Kresak went 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles, five RBI, and he scored two runs.
Cooper Smith (4-3) allowed two earned runs on four hits in four innings to earn the win. He struck out six batters.
Anthony Hardy and Chase Thomas each collected a pair of singles for the Panthers.
Michael Bailey (0-2) started and lasted two-thirds of an inning. He surrendered nine runs on five hits.
Flagler broke the program record for total bases in a game (44) and tied the hit record with 27.
In game two, the Saints scored four runs in the first inning, three of which were unearned, and then added five more in the second.
Flagler used six different pitchers to scatter three hits and strikeout five batters.
Benjamin Stubbs (3-1) was credited with the win in relief. He tossed a scoreless third inning.
Payton Palladino hit a one-out double in the first and scored two batters later on
Luke Welborn's single. Palladino hit two doubles in the game, scored three runs, and had one run batted in.
Matthew Burke finished 3-for-5 with a double, a run scored, and two runs driven in.
Bryce Fitzgerald collected three singles, scored three runs, and drove in another.
Michael Bailey had two-of-the-three Claflin hits, both singles.
Demetrous Warren (0-3) allowed nine earned runs on 13 hits in five innings of work.
