ST. AUGUSTINE – The Flagler College softball team split their doubleheader to end the series against Columbus State. The Saints took game one 8-1 to win the series before falling in game two 9-5.
The Saints were the first on the board with one run scored in the bottom of the first.
Sydney Stewart led for the Saints with a single through the left side and advanced to second on a passed ball. Back-to-back walks from
Emily Ricci and
Hannah Smith made it bases loaded and two outs when
Mackenzie Smith stepped up to the plate.
Mackenzie Smith was hit by a pitch to get on first, allowing each runner to advance and Stewart to score.
The second run for Flagler came in the bottom of the second on an RBI single from Ricci that scored Moss. Columbus State added their only run in the top of the third on an RBI single. A solo homer from
Mackenzie Smith in the bottom of the third made it 3-1 for the Saints. In the bottom of the fourth,
Hannah Smith grounded out and brought in
Paige Maseda for the fourth run.
Two more runs were scored in the bottom of the fifth for the Saints.
Jordan Moss connected to send a ball over the fence in left center, scoring herself and
Mackenzie Smith. The final runs for Flagler came in the bottom of the sixth, scoring two runs on three hits. Two runners on base and a double by
Kiersten James scored
Kyla Knier. A sacrifice fly from Maseda scored James to make it 8-1.
Madelyn Wise (8-2) earned the win for the Saints after pitching 4.2 innings and facing 21 batters.
Game two started with the Saints on the board first with Stewart scoring on a sacrifice fly from
Hannah Smith. Columbus State added two runs in the top of the third to take the lead 2-1. A solo homer in the bottom of the third from Ricci tied things up at 2-2.
Columbus State added two more runs in the top of the fifth. Another solo homer put the Saints within one run, with Knier sending the ball over right center. In the bottom of the sixth, the Saints took the lead with a two-run home run by Stewart that also scored Maseda.
Columbus State took the lead back in the top of the seventh with five runs scored on five hits, winning the game 9-5.
Sydney Stewart broke the single-season doubles record in the doubleheader with 16 doubles on the season.
The Saints travel to Saint Leo, Fla. to face Saint Leo on April 2 for a doubleheader starting at 3 p.m.
