ST. AUGUSTINE – Senior
Paige Maseda knocked two homers to help the Saints take game one 6-3 to start the weekend series against Columbus State University on Friday afternoon.
The game started off scoreless until the bottom of the fourth when the Saints scored their first two runs. Starting off the inning was
Mackenzie Smith with a single to left field and a sacrifice bunt by
Rylee Konowalchuk advanced her to second.
Paige Maseda stepped up to the plate with two outs and sent a ball over the fence in left center to score herself and Smith.
In the bottom of the fifth, Ricci was the first on base with a single up the middle and stole second to get into scoring position. The Cougars attempted to throw out Ricci at third, but she was called safe and
Hannah Smith reached first. A sacrifice bunt from
Cassidy Crump allowed Ricci to score to make it 3-0 for the Saints.
Olivia Burns entered to pinch run for Smith and was brought in by a double to center field from
Kyla Knier. An error by Columbus State allowed Konowalchuk to reach first and Knier to score the fifth run. The final run for the Saints came in the bottom of the sixth on a solo homer to center field from Maseda to make it 6-0.
The Cougars brought in three runs of their own in the top of the seventh, but the Saints held strong with
Madelyn Wise finishing in the circle to earn her fourth save.
Jordan Sheets (11-3) earned the win for the Saints after facing 31 batters in 6.2 innings pitched.
The Saints will continue their home series against Columbus State on Saturday (March 30) at Flagler Field starting at 12 p.m.
