Saints bats quieted by Bobcat pitching on Sunday

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – Flagler College was limited to one run on six hits in a doubleheader Sunday afternoon at John Kurtz Field. Georgia College & State University won both games, 4-0 and 7-1, to sweep the series.

Flagler is now 11-17 overall and 5-7 in the Peach Belt. Georgia College improved to 18-11 overall and 9-3 in league play. The Saints host Florida Tech on Tuesday at 6 p.m. at Drysdale Field.

In the opener, Bradley Wilson allowed a lead-off single to Trey Newland in the first inning and that was the last hit in the game for the Saints against Wilson and two other pitchers. Owen Thomas (1-1) earned the win in relief as three pitchers split three innings. He walked a batter and fanned two. Lex Kenny tossed three more scoreless frames to earn his fourth save. He struck out three.

Gabriel Wuerth hit an RBI-single in the fifth inning and Brandon Bellflower followed with a two-run home run to give the Bobcats a 3-0 lead.

Evan Cowan went 3-for-4 with a double for GCSU.

Cooper Smith (3-3) took the loss for the Saints. He allowed four runs on 10 hits in 5.2 innings of work. Smith induced 10 ground outs and six more fly outs.

In game two, Matthew Mebane belted a two-run home run in the third inning to give the Bobcats a 3-0 lead. He finished the game 3-for-5 with a double and two home runs. Mebane drove in five runs.

That was more than enough support for Jacob Ryan (5-1) who tossed a complete game five-hitter with five strikeouts. He retired 15-of-the-first-16 batters he faced.

Cam McNearney collected three singles for the Bobcats.

Isaiah Wellman (0-1) surrendered three runs on seven hits in 3.2 innings for the Saints.

Matthew Burke hit a double. Four more Saints each had a single.
