ST. AUGUSTINE – The Flagler College softball team saw their first perfect game in program history, as well as a new team single season and single game home run record, in their midweek matchup against Allen University on Wednesday. Game one saw the history making with an 18-0 victory for the Saints and game two ended in a 9-0 win.
The Saints tabbed six home runs to beat the single game home run record and
Jordan Sheets threw the first perfect game in program history. Five runs were scored on four hits in the bottom of the first with
Sydney Stewart drawing a walk to get on base to start it off. She stole second and third, then scored on a sacrifice fly from
Emily Ricci. Back-to-back singles from
Hannah Smith and
Cassidy Crump put two runners on base.
Kiersten James reached on a fielder's choice and both runners advanced with no outs recorded due to an error by the Yellowjackets. Bases loaded and
Mackenzie Smith connected on a double down the left field line to bring in James, Crump and
Hannah Smith. The final run of the inning came on a double by
Jordan Moss that scored
Mackenzie Smith, making it 5-0 for the Saints.
Back-to-back solo homers from Crump and James started off the bottom of the third for Flagler.
Mackenzie Smith was up next and drew a walk that put her on base for
Rylee Konowalchuk to send a ball over left center for a two-run homer.
The bottom of the fourth saw nine runs on nine hits to complete all the runs for Flagler. Once again the inning started off with back-to-back homers, making it 11-0. A fielding error and a wild pitch put James on second base, then a dropped fly put
Mackenzie Smith on base and advanced her to second with James on third. A single by Konowalchuk scored James to make it 12-0.
Reese Snipes came in to pinch hit and connected on a single through the right side that brought Smith home. Bases were loaded and Ricci knocked a grand slam to bring in Stewart, Snipes, Konowalchuk and herself. The final run came on a bunt by
Mackenzie Smith to make it 18-0 and the game ended after five innings in run-rule fashion.
Game two started off strong for the Saints with
Rachel Hester striking out all three batters to begin the game. In the top of the second, she struck out three of the four batters faced. The first run was scored in the bottom of the second when a muffed throw on a bunt by Moss allowed James to score. Konowalchuk scored on a wild pitch to make it 2-0 for the Saints.
Crump knocked her third homer of the day to start off the bottom of the third and was followed by a two-run home run for Moss that scored Konowalchuk, making it 5-0. Hester saw three batters in the top of the fourth and struck them all out looking. One again, an inning started with a solo homer, this time from Stewart. Ricci drew a walk and scored on a double to left center by Knier. An RBI single from James brought in Knier and a double from
Mackenzie Smith put herself and James in scoring position. A groundout to third allowed James to score the final run for the Saints and Hester striking out the final two batters ended it 9-0 for Flagler after five innings.
Flagler broke the team single season home run record with 49 homers so far this season.
The Saints travel to Dahlonega, Ga. for their weekend series against University of North Georgia on Saturday (March 23).
