Saints hand No. 1 Nighthawks first loss in PBC play

DAHLONEGA, Ga. – The Flagler College softball team earned a win over No. 1 University of North Georgia in game one to make it the first time in ten years the Saints have taken down the Nighthawks in Dahlonega, Georgia. Flagler took game one 5-3 before falling in game two 11-1 in a run-rule loss.
 
The Saints started game one off strong with four runs coming in the top of the first. Sydney Stewart got things going with a double into right field, she scored on an RBI single by Hannah Smith. Next up was Cassidy Crump who drew a walk to advance Smith to second. A single to left field from Kyla Knier scored Hannah Smith and a wild pitch advanced Crump and Knier into scoring position. The last two runs of the inning came on a single to right center by Mackenzie Smith.
 
In the top of the second, Flagler added their final and fifth run of the game. Paige Maseda started off the inning with a walk to get on base and was advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Stewart. Emily Ricci connected on a double to bring in Maseda to make it 5-0 for the Saints. 
 
The Flagler defense held strong until the bottom of the seventh when UNG added three runs of their own. Flagler was able to hold off and win the game 5-3. 
 
Jordan Sheets earned the win for the Saints after throwing six innings and facing 31 batters. Maddie Wise earned her third save of the season for finishing the game off. 
 
Game two started strong in favor of the Nighthawks, putting up three runs on four hits in the bottom of the second. They added six more in the bottom of the third to extend their lead to 9-0. The top of the fourth saw the only run for the Saints after Ricci scored on an infield single by Mackenzie Smith
 
The Nighthawks added two more runs in the bottom of the fourth and finished off the game in five innings to win in 11-1. 
 
The Saints will finish the series against University of North Georgia on Sunday (March 24) at Haines & Carolyn Hill Stadium.
