ST. AUGUSTINE – Defensive miscues by Flagler College in the seventh inning led to Saint Leo University scoring a pair of runs in route to a 5-2 win Friday night at Drysdale Field.
Saint Leo improved to 3-1 overall and Flagler is now 0-5. The same two teams meet in a doubleheader at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
Trey Newland scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the first inning to give Flagler an early 1-0 lead.
The Lions took the lead after a two-run third inning and then extended the lead by plating two more runs in the seventh. Caleb Adams drew a one-out walk, stole second, and then stole third. He trotted home after the throw to third base was wide of the bag. Cooper Miles followed with a single, he stole second and then took third on an errant throw to second base. He scored on a passed ball.
Daniel Fischer (0-2) took the loss on the hill for Flagler. He allowed two runs on five hits in five innings of work. Fischer fanned four, retired six batters on ground outs, and four more on fly outs.
Jake Hill and
Steven Reiss worked in relief.
Six different Saints had one hit.
Trey Newland and
Taylor Clapp each hit a double.
Brayden Heidel (2-0) allowed one run on three hits in six innings of work. He struck out seven batters. Nick Jennings worked a scoreless ninth inning with two strikeouts to earn his second save of the young season.
Mikey Scott went 2-for-4 with a solo home run and two runs batted in. Miles collected two singles and scored two runs.
