Saints swept by Lions on Saturday

ST. AUGUSTINE – Flagler College dropped both ends of a doubleheader to Saint Leo University, 5-0 and 4-2, Saturday afternoon at Drysdale Field.

Flagler is 0-7 overall while Saint Leo is now 5-1. Flagler ventures out on the road for the first time on Tuesday as it visits Florida Tech.

In the opener, Saint Leo scored all the runs it would need in two innings. The Lions plated two in the third and got three more in the fourth. Zach Benson hit a two-run single in the fourth.

Luke Lashutka (2-0) and Luke Pappas combined on the shutout. Lashutka tossed eight innings and scattered six hits. He induced 13 ground outs and seven more fly outs. Lashutka retired 12 of the first 14 batters he faced.

Mikey Scott hit three singles and drove in a run. Yazael Nunez also collected three singles, but scored a run and had one run batted in.

Cooper Smith (0-1) surrendered five runs on seven hits in four innings of work for Flagler.

Luke Welborn went 2-for-4 with a double.

In the second game, the Saints grabbed an early 1-0 lead thanks to a lead-off double by Trey Newland, who took third two batters later on a fly ball and then scored on a balk in the first inning.

Saint Leo got its offense going in the sixth when Cooper Miles and Scott hit back-to-back two-out singles. After a Flagler error, Luke Houin hit a two-run single to the gap in right-center and the Lions grabbed a 3-1 lead. All three runs were unearned.

Kevin RisCassi helped the Saints answer in the bottom half of the inning with an RBI-double.

Sam Cole (1-1) allowed two runs and scattered 10 hits to pick up the win for Saint Leo. Nick Jennings pocketed his third save after tossing a scoreless ninth.

Giuseppe Arcuri collected a pair of singles for the Lions.

Huston Wynne (0-1) took the loss for Flagler. He allowed three unearned runs on six hits in six innings.

Taylor Clapp finished with three singles and he scored a run. Jesse Sullivan hit a pair of singles.
