ST. AUGUSTINE – Flagler College had the tying run on second base in the ninth inning, after scoring three runs in that inning, but couldn't push the run across in a 5-4 loss to Lenoir-Rhyne University in a non-conference baseball game Sunday afternoon at Drysdale Field. The game was delayed for over two hours due to rain.
Lenoir-Rhyne leaves with a 4-0 record while Flagler is now 0-4. The Saints host Saint Leo University next weekend. The first game is Friday at 6 p.m.
The Saints trailed 5-0 going into the home-half of the fifth inning.
Trey Newland and
Mason Gray hit back-to-back one-out doubles and Newland scored the first run of the game.
Cade Miller came on to pitch for the Bears to begin the ninth.
Payton Palladino greeted him with a pinch-hit double to left-center to start the rally. Another pinch hitter,
Riley Fitzgerald, singled to right-center to put runners on the corners. Newland's single up the middle plated Palladino to cut the score to 5-2. Enter Michael Ribis to the hill for Lenoir-Rhyne who unleashed a wild pitch to move the runners up to second and third.
Mason Gray's groundout scored Fitzgerald and then Newland scored on a wild pitch to make it a one-run game (5-4).
Luke Welborn followed with a double to left-center, just out of reach of a diving center fielder. But Welborn was stranded there.
Andy Cook (1-0) tossed two innings in relief and allowed one run on two hits with three strikeouts. Spencer Floyd finished the last one-third of an inning with one walk and one strikeout to earn the save.
Evan Wood (0-1) hurled 3.2 innings and allowed two earned runs on three hits. He walked two and fanned two.
Eli Roberts,
Jace Thomas,
Bryceton Berry, and
Parker Adams worked in relief.
Newland collected two singles, scored two runs, and drove in another. Welborn went 2-for-5 with a double.
Zach Evans went 2-for-4 with a double, two runs batted in, and he scored a run for Lenoir-Rhyne. Blake Bean collected a pair of singles and walked twice.
