ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla.- The Flagler College softball team split their final two games of the Flagler Invitational on Saturday, beating Barry University 8-0 and falling to Florida Tech 3-1.
In game one, things were quiet until the bottom of the fourth when Flagler put up three runs to get the early lead. The first was a based load walk that brought in
Hannah Smith.
Emily Ricci followed that up with a double to left center that scored
Kiersten James and
Mackenzie Smith. The Flagler defense saw a 1-2-3 inning in the bottom of the fifth to keep their momentum moving.
The bottom of the sixth proved productive for the Saints, bringing in five runs on five hits to end the game in a run-rule. The first run came from
Kyla Knier with a double to left center that allowed James to score on a fielding error by the catcher.
Sydney Stewart hit a two-out single to bring in Knier.
Paige Maseda bunted to first base and brought Ricci home to make it 6-0.
Hannah Smith followed that up with an infield single that scored Stewart and the final run came from Maseda on a wild pitch, ending it 8-0 for the Saints.
Jordan Sheets (2-0) earned the win for the Saints and
Madelyn Wise earned her second save of the season.
Kyla Knier and
Emily Ricci both went 2-for-3 in the first game. Ricci had two runs batted in and one run of her own, while Knier had one run batted in and one run of her own.
In game two against Florida Tech, Flagler was the first on the board with their only run coming in the bottom of the first. Maseda doubled to right center to get on base and was brought in by
Hannah Smith with a single up the middle.
The Panthers put up three runs in the top of the fourth and held the lead until the end. Alex Hendrian earned the win for Florida Tech.
Dakota Kulis saw her first loss for Flagler.
Rachel Hester and Wise both had four strikeouts in the second game. Maseda went 1-for-3 with a run scored.
The final games of the Flagler Invitational, scheduled to play on Sunday, have been canceled.
The Saints will face Chadron State in a doubleheader on Tuesday (Feb. 6) starting at 3 p.m. at Flagler Field.
