ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla.- The Flagler College softball team earned two wins over Chadron State College in their midweek doubleheader on Tuesday at Flagler Field. Game one ended in a 9-5 win and game two finished in run rule victory 8-0 for the Saints.
The first inning of the day was extremely entertaining with nine runs scored total in the inning. Chadron State was the first on the board, putting up four runs on two hits. Flagler followed it right back with five runs on four hits.
Sydney Stewart started it off with a walk and
Hannah Smith singled to right field to make it two runners on base. A missed catch by the pitcher caused Stewart to score the first run for the Saints. The next two runs came from
Mackenzie Smith with a single to left field, scoring
Cassidy Crump and
Hannah Smith.
Kiersten James followed it with a single of her own, then
Kyla Knier connected for a double to right center that brought in both James and
Mackenzie Smith to make it 5-4 in favor of the Saints.
The rest of Flagler's runs came in the bottom of the third where Crump started things off with a single up the middle.
Reese Snipes reached on a fielder's choice that saw Crump out at second. The first two runs of the inning came from
Mackenzie Smith when she knocked a two-run homer off the scoreboard to make it 7-4. Back-to-back singles by James and Knier put two runners on for the Saints and a passed ball advanced them both in to scoring position.
Emily Ricci sent a ball to center field to score James on single and Stewart hit a sacrifice fly to bring in Knier as the final run for Flagler.
Chadron State added their final run in the top of the fourth with an RBI single.
Madelyn Wise earned her first win of the season after throwing 7 innings, facing 34 batters and tabbing 11 strikeouts.
In game two, the Saints didn't allow a hit for Chadron until the third inning but managed to get out of the inning with bases loaded and no runs recorded. The bottom of the third saw four runs for Flagler on five hits. Knier was first on base with a single to left field and went on to steal second. Ricci followed that with a single of her own that scored Knier to put the first run of the game on the board in favor of the Saints. With runners on second and third,
Hannah Smith connected for a single up the middle and brought home Stewart and Ricci. The singles continued and Riley Konowalchuk tabbed the final run of the inning, scoring
Hannah Smith to make it 4-0.
In the bottom of the fourth, Ricci and Knier were in scoring position on second and third, respectively. A fielding error by second base allowed
Paige Maseda to reach first and Knier to score. Ricci scored on an RBI single through the left side by
Hannah Smith and a sacrifice fly from Crump added the seventh run for the Saints. The walk-off came in the bottom of the sixth when the Saints scored their eighth run to put the run rule into play. Two walks to start the inning put runners on for Flagler with Crump up to bat, who finished it off with a single to shortstop to bring in Maseda to end it 8-0.
Taylor Barrett earned the win for the Saints, starting the game and pitching three innings.
Hannah Smith went 4-for-7 with two runs and three RBI on the day.
Mackenzie Smith also had a day, going 4-for-6 with her first homerun of the season, scoring two runs and batting in four. Knier tabbed three runs scored and two RBI on a 5-for-6 day at the plate.
The Saints host the Old Coast Classic at Flagler Field this weekend (Feb. 9-11). Flagler will face Edward Waters to start the tournament on Friday at 10 a.m.
