Saints lose both games in a doubleheader to the Bears

ST. AUGUSTINE – Flagler College dropped both ends of a doubleheader to Lenoir-Rhyne University, 4-0 and 7-5, Saturday afternoon at Drysdale Field.

Lenoir-Rhyne improved to 3-0 while Flagler fell to 0-3. The same two teams are scheduled to finish the series tomorrow at noon, weather permitting.

In the opener, the game was a scoreless pitching duel for the first six innings. But a squeeze bunt by Bryce Stober in the top of the seventh gave the Bears a 1-0 lead. Cole Laskowski hit a two-run double in the top of the ninth.

Dillon Chapa (1-0) retired the first 14 batters in a row and allowed only one base runner. He fanned five and walked one in six innings of work.

Cooper Smith tossed five scoreless innings for the Saints and allowed just one hit. He walked a batter and fanned two. Smith retired six batters on fly outs and six more on ground outs.

Jake Hill (0-1) took the loss in relief. In two innings of work, he allowed two runs on two hits. Clay Callan and Anthony Nofi also saw work on the hill.

Taylor Clapp had Flagler's first hit, a double, in the seventh. Jaxson Wentworth added a single.

Laskowski hit a pair of doubles and drove in two runs for Lenoir-Rhyne. Owen Blackledge added a pair of singles.

In game two, Donovan Garcia hit a two-run double to right-center in the fourth inning to give the Saints a 4-1 lead. But the Bears plated two in the fifth and Sal Carricato belted the first of his two solo home runs in the sixth inning to tie the game.

An unearned run in the seventh preceded Carricato's lead-off homer in the eight to give Lenoir-Rhyne a 6-4 lead. He went 2-for-6 with three runs scored and two runs batted in.

Kobie Cushing (1-0) picked up the win in relief after tossing two scoreless innings. Kellan Gradishar got the save as he allowed an unearned run and one hit in two innings.

Zach Evans led the Bears going 3-for-5 with a double and three RBI. Blackledge added a pair of doubles and he scored three runs.

Benjamin Stubbs (0-1) took the loss in relief. He allowed one earned run and two hits in one and one-third innings pitched. Stubbs was one of six pitchers to see time on the mound.

Bryce Fitzgerald went 2-for-4 with a triple.
