SAVANNAH, Ga. – The Flagler College softball team earned two wins against Savannah State University in a midweek doubleheader on Tuesday. The Saints took game one in a 7-3 victory and finished the day 6-0 in game two.
Game one started off strong for Flagler with two runs scored in the top of the first.
Sydney Stewart earned a walk to start it off and stole second to get into scoring position. A double down the left field line from
Emily Ricci scored Stewart for the first run of the game.
Hannah Smith was hit by a pitch and
Cassidy Crump drew a walk to make it bases loaded with no outs.
Kyla Knier lined out to shortstop to get the first out of the inning and a sacrifice fly from
Mackenzie Smith scored Ricci to make it 2-0.
Savannah State added their first run in the bottom of the third on a single to center field.
The game did not see another run until the top of the seventh when Flagler added five runs on six hits. Stewart led with a bunt and stole second, then advanced to third when Ricci grounded out to third.
Hannah Smith singled to center field to score Stewart and Crump followed with a double to left field to score Smith. The next run came in on a single by
Mackenzie Smith that scored Crump to make it 5-1.
Jordan Moss was up to bat with
Kiersten James and
Mackenzie Smith on base, she connected on a double that scored both runners to make it 7-1.
Savannah State added two more runs in the bottom of the seventh, but the Saints took game one 7-3.
Madelyn Wise (6-2) earned the win for the Saints after entering in the bottom of the fourth and pitching three innings. The senior faced 11 batters and struck out five, not allowing a single hit or run.
Flagler was the first to score with two runs coming in the top of the first to start off game two. Stewart led with a single to left field and a sacrifice bunt by Ricci advanced her to second. A single from
Hannah Smith advanced Stewart to third and she scored on a bunt by Crump. Another single saw the second run for the Saints with
Hannah Smith scoring on Knier's hit.
The bottom of the first and second saw 1-2-3 innings for the Flagler defense. Two outs started off the top of the third, but a double down the left field line put Crump on second. She scored on a single to center field from Knier to make it 3-0. The Saints added three runs on four hits in the top of the sixth to finish it off. James was hit by a pitch to start off the inning and then back-to-back singles allowed James to score. A single from Stewart scored both
Paige Maseda and Moss to make it 6-0 for the Saints.
Jordan Sheets (5-2) earned the win for Flagler after tossing four innings and striking out four batters.
Paige Maseda went 5-for-8 with one run scored and one run brought in.
Mackenzie Smith went 4-for-7 with two runs batted in and one run scored.
The Saints return home for a weekend series against Georgia Southwestern on Friday and Saturday (March 8-9) at Flagler Field.
