MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – The Flagler College softball team split the day to start the conference segment against Georgia College and State University on Saturday. The Saints fell 6-5 in the first game after a late push from the Bobcats but came back to take game two 5-3.
The Bobcats were the first on the board in game one with two runs scored in the bottom of the first. In the top of the second,
Kyla Knier singled to left field and advanced to second on a Bobcat error to get into scoring position. Back-to-back singles from
Rylee Konowalchuk and
Mackenzie Smith made it bases loaded with no outs. Knier scored the first run for the Saints on a sacrifice fly from
Paige Maseda.
Hannah Smith doubled to left center in the top of the third to start things off for the Saints. Knier singled to the pitcher with two outs to make it two runners on base. A single to center field from
Mackenzie Smith scored Knier and
Hannah Smith to give Flagler the lead at 3-2.
The Bobcats added their third run in the bottom of the fourth to tie things up. Knier scored
Cassidy Crump on a single to left field to take the lead once again for Flagler in the top of the fifth. The bottom of the fifth saw a run for the Bobcats, making it 4-4. Maseda connected for a solo home run in the top of the sixth but was followed up by two runs for GCSU in the bottom of the sixth.
Jana Shellhorse earned the win for the Bobcats and
Madelyn Wise (3-2) got the loss for the Saints after pitching six innings.
Flagler came out strong to start game two, scoring two runs on three hits in the top of the first. The first at bat of the game saw a home run from
Sydney Stewart.
Emily Ricci followed it with a single to get on base, she made it to second on a groundout. A single to right field from Crump allowed Ricci to score on the throw, making it 2-0.
The game did not see another run until the bottom of the fourth when GCSU added their first run, and then again in the bottom of the fifth when they earned their second run.
In the top of the sixth, Konowalchuk singled through the right side and Moss reached on a throwing error. Maseda grounded out to first but brought in
Kiersten James who pinch ran for Konowalchuk. An error by right field allowed Stewart to reach first and advance to third, as well as score
Jordan Moss. A sacrifice fly from Ricci scored Stewart to make it 5-2 for the Saints.
The Bobcats added their final run in the bottom of the seventh, but it was not enough, and the Saints took game two 5-3.
Dakota Kulis (3-2) earned the win for the Saints after throwing 3.2 innings and striking out four batters.
The Saints will finish the series against Georgia College and State University tomorrow (Feb. 25) at 12 p.m.
