ST. AUGUSTINE – Flagler College loaded the bases in the 10
th inning, with nobody out, and
Taylor Clapp belted a single to the base of the wall in left-center to drive in the winning run in a 5-4 victory over No. 25 (NCBWA Division II Top 25) Rollins College in a non-conference baseball game Tuesday night at Drysdale Field.
Flagler extended its winning streak to three games and improved to 3-8. Rollins lost its second game in a row and fell to 5-4. Flagler opens a three-game homestand this weekend, starting on Friday at 6 p.m., against American International College.
Mason Gray led off the 10
th with a single to right field and
Luke Welborn followed as he dropped a single into the left-center gap and Gray hustled to third, just beating the throw. Welborn advanced to second on defensive indifference and then
Payton Palladino ran a 3-0 count. The Tars coaching staff opted to intentionally walk him to load the bases. With the infield and outfield drawn in, Clapp belted the third pitch he saw well over the head of the Rollins left fielder and Gray trotted home.
The Saints fought back from a 4-1 deficit. Palladino hit an RBI double and then scored on Clapp's single to pull Flagler to within a run.
Bryce Fitzgerald hit a leadoff home run over the right field fence to tie the game.
Blake Pesante (1-0) tossed two scoreless innings to finish the game and earn the win. He allowed only two hits and he walked a batter. Pesante was the fifth pitcher to work in the game for Flagler.
Huston Wynne started and was relieved by
Justin Haskins,
Drew Rosenberg, and
Clay Callan.
Gray, Welborn, Palladino, and Clapp each finished with two hits. Gray scored three runs while Palladino and Clapp each drove in two runs.
Jacob Burr (0-1) took the loss as he started the 10
th for the Tars and failed to retire a batter.
Jeslyn Whitehead and Mason Wilson each collected two hits for Rollins. Whitehead scored a pair of runs. Chris Sparber drove in two runs.
