ST. AUGUSTINE – Flagler College scored 18 runs on 19 hits and got a pair of spectacular performances on the mound to sweep a doubleheader, 13-1 and 5-0, from Eckerd College Friday evening at Drysdale Field.
The Saints improved to 2-8 while the Tritons dropped to 5-4. The game on Saturday between the same two teams was cancelled due to the impending weather in the local area. The next home game is Tuesday at 6 p.m. against Rollins College, who played for the national title last year.
In the opener,
Daniel Fischer (1-2) scattered four hits over seven scoreless innings to earn the win. He struck out a career-high six batters. Fischer also induced 10 ground outs and one fly out.
He got all of the offense he needed in the first inning.
Luke Welborn's single to center field scored
Trey Newland to put the Saints up, 1-0. Later, a couple of walks loaded the bases and
Matthew Burke was hit by a pitch to score Welborn. A wild pitch allowed the third run of the inning to score.
Bryce Fitzgerald belted a three-run home run in the sixth and
Taylor Clapp hit a two-run shot in the seventh.
Burke collected two singles and drove in three runs. Clapp went 2-for-3 with the homer, two runs batted in, and he scored three runs.
Austin Kapela (0-2) took the loss on the hill for Eckerd. He allowed six runs on four hits in 3.1 innings. He walked five and fanned six.
Cam Collier finished with three singles and scored a run.
In the second game,
Cooper Smith (1-1) was equally frustrating to the Triton hitters. He scattered four hits in six scoreless innings. Smith fanned seven batters and only allowed two base runners to reach second base.
Flagler took advantage of a couple Eckerd miscues in the bottom of the first inning. Newland led off with a walk and
Mason Gray reached on a fielding error by the Triton pitcher when he dropped down a sacrifice bunt. Welborn hit a ground ball to the Eckerd second baseman whose throw to the second base bag got away allowing Newland to score.
Kevin RisCassi's squeeze bunt single scored another run.
The Saints added a tally in the second and two more in the third.
Riley Fitzgerald hit two doubles, scored a run, and knocked in two runs. RisCassi finished with two singles, one RBI, and he scored a run.
Rene Ramos (0-2) allowed four earned runs on seven hits in three-plus innings.
Seven different Tritons had one hit. Reid Lisle and Tyler Young each hit a double.
