Flagler splits two games today in the Old Coast Classic

ST. AUGUSTINE – The Flagler College softball team split a pair of games on Saturday in the Old Coast Classic. Flagler lost a 10-inning game to Wingate University, 10-9, but bounced back to handle Edward Waters University 10-5 at Flagler Field.

Flagler is now 7-3 overall. Wingate leaves with an 8-3 record and Edward Waters goes home with a 5-5 record. Flagler wraps up the tournament tomorrow with a doubleheader against Converse University at 11 a.m.

In the second game, the Saints scored at least one run in all but one inning. Leading 4-2 going into the bottom of the fourth, Flagler would pull away. Paige Maseda led off the inning with a home run and later, Cassidy Crump's double scored another. A sacrifice fly by Kyla Knier followed by an RBI-single by Mackenzie Smith gave the Saints a comfortable 8-2 lead.

Rachel Hester (1-1) allowed two earned runs on five hits in five innings of work to earn the win. She fanned four batters.

Hannah Smith paced the 13-hit attack with three singles and she scored a run. Crump went 2-for-3 with a double, a home run, two runs scored, and three runs batted in. Knier went 2-for-3 with a double, one run scored, and she knocked in a pair of runs.

Shai-Ann Currie (0-2) took the loss for the Tigers. She surrendered five earned runs on 10 hits. Kylah Gardner went 2-for-3 with a solo home run.

In the opener, Wingate scored two runs in the top of the sixth to tie the game at 8-all and each team scored a run in the ninth to force another inning.

To open the 10th, the Bulldogs placed Raelynn Kramer at second base and a ground out moved her to third. Katy Kahlich's infield single to shortstop was just enough to score Kramer with the go-ahead run.

Knier started at second base in Flagler's half of the 10th inning. After an infield pop-up, Rylee Konowalchuk singled to shortstop and the Saints had two runners on.

Hali Scott came on to pitch for Wingate and she got Jordan Moss to ground out to third base for a force out. Down to their last out, Kiersten James struck out swinging to end the game.

Raechel Cutcher (2-1) picked up the win in relief for the Bulldogs. She allowed one run on six hits in six innings. Scott earned her second save of the season.

Kahlich went 3-for-5 with a triple, a run scored, and four RBI. Savannah Brooks was a triple shy of the cycle, scored a run, and drove in two runs.

Jordan Sheets (2-1) took the loss in relief for the Saints. She allowed one earned run on five hits with five strikeouts.

Mackenzie Smith led the Saints going 2-for-5 with a double, a run scored, and four RBI. Hannah Smith singled twice and scored two runs. Crump went 2-for-4 with a double, two runs scored, and had two RBI.
