ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla.- The Flagler College softball team earned two wins over Converse University to finish off the Old Coast Classic on Sunday. The Saints took game one 4-1 and finished the day with a 3-2 win in game two.
Jordan Sheets struck out two batters to start off the game for Flagler. Keeping the starting energy strong, three runs were scored in the bottom of the first for the Saints.
Sydney Stewart led the inning with a double to right field, followed by a single from
Emily Ricci that advanced Stewart to third.
Hannah Smith drew a walk to make it bases loaded with no outs. A throwing error from the catcher allowed Ricci to advance to third and Stewart to score the first run for Flagler.
Kyla Knier reached on a fielders choice that allowed Ricci to score to make it 2-0, followed by an RBI single up the middle from
Mackenzie Smith to bring in the final run of the inning. In the bottom of the fifth,
Mackenzie Smith connected on a two-out double to right center that brought in
Cassidy Crump to make it 4-0.
The Valkyries earned their only run of the game in the top of the sixth on an RBI single. Flagler finished the game with a 1-2-3 inning.
Jordan Sheets (3-1) earned the win for the Saints after pitching a complete game, facing 28 batters and recording six strikeouts.
Game two started off similar with
Madelyn Wise facing three batters in the top of the first. Flagler earned their first run in the bottom of the first inning with an RBI single by
Hannah Smith that scored Stewart. Converse took the lead with two runs of their own in the top of the second.
The tying run came in the bottom of the fifth for the Saints. Back-to-back singles up the middle put two runners on for Flagler with two outs, Crump connected for a single to left field to score Ricci, tying the game 2-2. The game stayed tied until
Paige Maseda scored on a throwing error by the catcher to walk it off and win the game 3-2 in the bottom of the seventh.
Rachel Hester earned the win after pitching four innings, facing 12 batters and recording five strikeouts with only one hit allowed.
The Saints will travel to Greenwood, S.C. for the Bearcat/Fleet Invitational on Friday and Saturday (Feb. 16-17). Flagler will play their first game against Erskine at 10 a.m. at Doug Spears Field on Friday.
