ST. AUGUSTINE – Flagler College led No. 7 (NABC Division II Top 25) University of North Georgia for nearly 34 minutes, but it was a late rally by UNG that clinched the game 71-70 in a Peach Belt Conference men's basketball game Saturday afternoon at Flagler Gymnasium.
North Georgia improved to 11-1 overall and 2-0 in the Peach Belt. Flagler is now 7-5 overall and 0-2 in conference play. The Saints head to USC Aiken on Wednesday (Jan. 10).
North Georgia's AJ White ignited a 14-2 run late in the second half. He sank a pair of three-pointers and was responsible for 12-of-the-14 points the Nighthawks scored in that stretch. A pair of Frank Champion free throws with 53 seconds left gave UNG its first lead since the 11:57 mark of the first half.
Malik Bryant sank a pair of free throws with 27 seconds remaining to give Flagler the lead back, 70-69. But Frank Champion made a reverse layup with six seconds left to end the game.
Bryant led the Saints with 16 points, six rebounds, and four assists. He made 6-of-7 from the field.
Kyle Young came off the bench to provide 15 points, five rebounds, and he blocked two shots.
Omar Figueroa and
Destin Clark each scored 10 points.
Flagler used a 20-6 run midway through the first half to take a 39-27 lead. The Saints led 39-31 at the half.
White led all scorers with 30 points as he did his damage on the free throw line making 12-of-14. Frank Champion deposited 21 points, grabbed six rebounds, and blocked two shots.
The Nighthawks made 25-of-32 from the free throw line.
