ST. AUGUSTINE –
Malik Bryant scored a game-high 23 points on 9-of-9 shooting from the field, including 2-for-2 from three-point range, and 3-of-4 from the free throw line in Flagler College's 79-74 win over a stubborn Clayton State University team in a Peach Belt Conference men's basketball game Saturday afternoon at Flagler Gymnasium.
Flagler extended its winning streak to three games and improved to 10-6 overall and 3-3 in the Peach Belt. Clayton State lost its fourth game in a row and dropped to 5-11 overall and 1-5 in conference play. Flagler ventures out on the road on Wednesday and will face Columbus State University.
The Saints led for all but six and one-half minutes in the game and held a 45-33 advantage at the half. A
Kyle Young layup with 9:45 remaining in the game gave Flagler its largest lead, 69-54.
But the Lakers would not go away. Clayton State rallied to pull to within three (77-74) after Elijah Dates' second consecutive trey with 49 seconds left. That capped a 20-8 run by the Lakers.
Destin Clark's layup with 19 seconds left was just enough for Flagler to put the game away. He finished with 19 points and eight rebounds.
Tyler Collier tied his season high with 12 points on 4-of-5 shooting from the field, including 2-of-3 from three-point range.
The Saints dominated inside outscoring the Lakers 48-18 in the paint.
Jamall Clyce led Clayton State with 16 points. Travis Harper II and TJ Stargell finished with 15 and 14 points, respectively. Stargell dished out a game-high eight assists.
The Lakers shot 57.7 percent (15-26) from the field in the second half.
NOTE: With the win today, Flagler has reeled off nine consecutive victories over Clayton State in the all-time series.
