AMERICUS, Ga. –
Trey Newland had two of Flagler College's five hits in a 4-0 loss to Georgia Southwestern State University in a Peach Belt Conference baseball game Friday night at Hurricane Stadium.
Georgia Southwestern improved to 27-17 overall and 20-8 in the Peach Belt. Flagler is now 18-28 overall and 12-16 in league play.
Hurricane ace Nick McCollum (8-2) tossed a complete game shutout. He scattered five hits, walked two batters and stuck out nine. McCollum retired 18 of the last 19 batters he faced.
He got all the support he needed in the third inning. Georgia Southwestern strung together three consecutive base hits to load the bases. Cory Lee hit a grounder to second base and the Saints got the force out at second, but couldn't complete the double play, which allowed the game's first run to score.
The Hurricanes added two runs in the fourth and one more in the fifth.
Gage Voorhees (2-5) went the distance and took the loss for Flagler. He allowed four runs on 10 hits with one walk and three strikeouts. Voorhees induced 13 fly outs and eight ground outs.
Reid Ragsdale hit two doubles and scored two runs for the Hurricanes. Jake Blinstrub collected two singles and had one run batted in. Garrett Bradley also had two singles and one RBI as did Jared White.
Matthew Burke hit a double for Flagler while
Coy Phillips and
Jaxson Wentworth each hit a single.
The same two teams meet tomorrow at 2 p.m.
