ST. AUGUSTINE –
Trey Newland's infield single in the bottom of the sixth inning scored the go-ahead run and helped Flagler College to defeat Edward Waters University 5-3 Tuesday night at Drysdale Field.
Flagler won its seventh game in a row and improved to 18-27 overall. Edward Waters had its three-game winning streak snapped and dropped to 20-20.
Taylor Clapp reached first base after being hit by a pitch to start the sixth inning for the Saints. Two batters later, Clapp went to second on
Ashton Thomas' single through the right side of the infield. A ground out moved the runners up a base.
Simms Owens drew a two-out walk to load the bases and Newland followed with his hit. Edward Waters shortstop Payton Shubert dove into the hole behind second base to stop the sharp grounder, which kept the bases loaded and only one run to score.
Flagler got a much-needed insurance run in the seventh.
Jack Hodges led off with a double to the right-center gap. He scored on Clapp's single to right field.
Benjamin Stubbs (2-0) picked up the win in relief. He tossed one scoreless inning with one strikeout.
Brad Vondruska tossed a scoreless ninth with two strikeouts and two hits to earn his first save of the year.
Clapp went 2-for-3 with a double, a run scored, and one run batted in.
Jaiden Warde hit a single and drove in three runs.
Carson Hurst (2-2) took the loss on the mound after allowing two runs on four hits with two walks and a pair of strikeouts.
Daquarius Thompkins led the Tigers with three singles and he scored a run. Chase Morris added two singles and a run scored.
Flagler closes out its regular season schedule this weekend at Georgia Southwestern State University. The first game is Friday at 6 p.m. at Hurricane Field.
