ST. AUGUSTINE –
Gage Voorhees (2-4) tossed a complete game shutout with nine strikeouts to help Flagler College defeat Claflin University 6-0 in a Peach Belt Conference baseball game Friday night at Drysdale Field.
The Saints extended their winning streak to four games and improved to 15-27 overall and 10-15 in the Peach Belt. Claflin dropped to 1-36 overall and 0-25 in league play.
Voorhees scattered four hits and only tossed 94 pitches, 76 of those were for strikes (81 percent strikes). He induced 11 fly outs and six ground outs. Voorhees did not allow a Panther to reach scoring position and he retired 17 of the last 18 batters he faced.
He got all the offense he would need in the second inning. With runners on the corners and one out,
Matthew Burke lifted a fly ball to right field, but the Claflin outfielder dropped the ball allowing
Justin Haskins to score from third base. Later in the inning, a
Jaxson Wentworth single drove in an insurance run.
Flagler added single tallies in the fourth and fifth innings and then
Jaiden Warde finished it off with a two-run single to left-center in the eighth.
Simms Owens finished with a single and a double, scored a run, and he had one run batted in.
Trey Newland collected a pair of singles.
Kyle Hawkins (0-12) went the distance for the Panthers and allowed four earned runs on eight hits.
Kobe Miller, Mckenzie Gay, Joshua Cooper, and Alvee Fulwood each hit a single for the Panthers.
The same two teams meet at 2 p.m. at Drysdale Field.
