ST. AUGUSTINE –
Mason Gray and
Jaiden Warde each had two hits, but it wasn't enough as Flagler College lost to No. 12 (
Collegiate Baseball Newspaper Division II Top 40) University of Mount Olive in a non-conference baseball game Sunday afternoon at Drysdale Field.
Mount Olive improved to 12-4 overall while Flagler is now 3-14.
The Trojans scored two runs in each of the first three innings to jump out to a 6-1 lead.
A two-run single by
Donovan Garcia was a part of a three-run third for the Saints to cut the deficit to 6-4.
Flagler added another tally in the fourth, thanks to a sacrifice fly, to pull to within a run, 6-5.
But Mount Olive scored an unearned run in the eighth and added three in the ninth, with two of those run coming when Gordon Pihl belted a home run that just cleared the left field wall by the foul pole.
Hayden Myrick (1-0) tossed 2.2 scoreless inning in relief and struck out three batters. He retired eight of the nine batters he faced. Blake Gipson added three scoreless innings in relief to earn his second save of the year.
The Trojans had five players with two hits. Dylan Jeffries went 2-for-3 with a double, one run batted in and he drew two walks. Alden Cottle collected two singles and scored three runs.
A.J. Prendergast (0-3) surrendered four runs on six hits with four walks and two strikeouts in 2.1 innings for the Saints.
Gray finished with a single, a double, one run scored and one RBI. Warde singled twice and knocked in a run.
Flagler takes on Notre Dame College of Ohio at 6 p.m. at Alfond Stadium at Winter Park, Florida.
