ST. AUGUSTINE –
Justin Haskins (1-2) had a big today as he collected three singles, scored a run and drove two in as well as picking up the win in relief as he struck out two in the first game of a doubleheader against No. 12 (
Collegiate Baseball Newspaper Division II Top 40) University of Mount Olive Saturday afternoon at Drysdale Field. Flagler won an 11-10 slugfest in the first game and Mount Olive took game two 15-4.
Flagler is now 3-13 on the season while Mount Olive is 11-4.
The opener provided some big swings of momentum to go along with a pair of rain delays.
The Trojans took an 8-7 lead going into the bottom of the seventh inning.
Matthew Burke led off and reached first base after being hit by a pitch. Three batters later, the same thing happened to
Jaxson Wentworth.
Mason Gray punched a single into right field to plate Burke and tie the game.
Trey Newland followed with a two-run double to give the Saints a 10-8 lead. Flagler scored all three runs with two outs.
Mount Olive was able to plate a pair of unearned runs in the top of the eighth as both runs were scored on Cooper George's single.
In the home half of the eighth,
Jaiden Warde and Haskins started the frame with back-to-back singles. Burke followed by dropping a sacrifice bunt down the first base line. However, Burke and the Mount Olive first baseman collided in the basepath and Burke was awarded first base to load the bases. A wild pitch scored Warde from third with the eventual game-winning run.
Haskins, who struck out the only batter he faced in the eighth, finished the job in the ninth by retiring all three batters he faced. He tossed 1.1 innings and retired all four batters he faced.
Warde went 4-for-5, scored two runs and drove in another. Newland finished 3-for-4 with a double, scored two runs, knocked in two more and stole two bases.
Andrew Ledbetter (1-1) took the loss in relief for the Trojans. He allowed one run on two hits in 1.1 innings.
George went 3-for-4 with a double, one run scored and six runs batted in. Dylan Jeffries belted a solo home run. JT Stone walked twice and scored three runs.
In the second game, Mount Olive scored four runs in the second and three more in the third to take a commanding 7-0 lead. Vito Patierno hit a three-run home run in the second.
Flagler was able to score two runs in the bottom of the third, but the Trojans erupted for a seven-run fifth inning to put the game away.
The Saints scored two runs in the seventh to end the game.
Jonathan Peacock (1-0) earned the win in relief after tossing two scoreless innings with a pair of strikeouts. He allowed two hits.
Patierno went 3-for-5 with a double, a home run, five RBI and he scored two runs.
The Trojans collected 14 hits.
Daniel Fischer (0-2) allowed five runs on five hits in two innings of work.
Drew Rosenberg,
Steven Reiss,
Benjamin Stubbs and
Jace Thomas all saw action on the mound.
Gray went 3-for-3 with two runs scored for the Saints.
Coy Phillips came off the bench to go 2-for-2 with a double and one RBI.
The same two teams meet tomorrow at noon in the rubber game of the series.
