ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla.- A fifth and sixth inning surge allowed the Flagler College softball team to win 8-6 over the University of South Carolina Beaufort in a conference game on Sunday afternoon at Flagler Field.
It was a tie game at 3-3 going into the bottom of the fifth inning.
Abbey O'Connor opened with a single to left field, followed by a single from
Cassidy Crump up the middle to put runners on first and second base.
Madelyn Childs' ground out allowed the runners to advance. A bunt from
Olivia Parker allowed O'Connor to score. A single from
Ari Bosch plated Crump and Parker to put the Saints (12-15, 7-5) up 6-3.
The Sand Sharks (8-21, 1-11) responded in the sixth inning with a home run from Chloe Turner to center field to make it 6-4.
At the bottom of the sixth inning,
Trinity Fry singled to the shortstop.
Paige Maseda's sacrifice bunt advanced Fry to second base. A single from
Abbey O'Connor plated Fry before O'Connor advanced to second on the throw.
Cassidy Crump's single and a stolen base put runners at second and third base. A sacrifice fly from Childs batted in O'Connor to put Flagler up 8-4.
The Sand Sharks added two runs in the seventh inning with a two-RBI home run from Mackenzie Freeman.
O'Connor secured the Saints' first run in the first inning off a single from Childs to left center to make it 3-1. In the second inning,
Mackenzie Smith's home run put the Saints within reach at 3-2.
Ari Bosch tied the game 3-3 after taking advantage of a sacrifice fly from Maseda.
During the game, O'Connor and Crump both went 3-for-4.
Rachel Hester (5-4) secured the win for Flagler after pitching five innings. The sophomore gave up eight hits and three runs. Hester had two strikeouts, walked one batter and induced 10 fly outs and five ground outs.
Caitlin Toole (4-5) took the loss for the Sand Sharks after pitching two innings, giving up three hits and three runs.
Next the Saints will host Rollins College on Tuesday, March 21 at Flagler Field.
