AIKEN, S.C. – Flagler College lost both ends of a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader at USC Aiken, 2-0 and 7-2, Saturday afternoon at Roberto Hernandez Stadium.
USC Aiken improved to 17-5 overall and is a perfect 9-0 in the Peach Belt. Flagler is now 4-17 overall and 1-8 in conference play.
In the opener,
Dylan Faulkner (1-2) tied his career-high with eight strikeouts and he only allowed two runs on four hits in eight innings, but it wasn't enough in what turned out to be a pitcher's duel. Faulkner retired 19 of the last 20 batters he faced.
Jacob Fletcher (4-0) tossed a three-hit shutout with four strikeouts for the Pacers. He retired 10 batters on ground outs and another 10 on flyouts. Fletcher retired 21 of the first 23 batters he faced and retired 13 in a row.
A pair of run-scoring singles in the second inning by Justin Byrd and Joseph Mozingo proved to be enough.
Flagler had chances in the eighth and ninth innings to get runs, but just couldn't push anyone home.
Jaiden Warde hit a double while
Trey Newland and
Mason Gray each hit a single.
In game two, the Pacers scored single runs in the first two innings, but a two-run third inning provided enough insurance for the win. Jackson Hannon and Mozingo had RBI singles in that inning for USC Aiken.
Luke Parker (1-0) was credited with the win in relief after tossing 2.1 innings. He allowed one run of three hits.
Josh Sharp went 2-for-3 with a double, one run batted in and he scored three runs. Mozingo collected a pair of singles and knocked in two runs.
Justin Haskins (1-3) took the loss on the hill for the Saints. He surrendered two runs on four hits in 1.2 innings. Haskins was one of seven pitchers used.
Newland had an RBI single in the third inning and Haskins scored on a sacrifice fly in the sixth.
Flagler hosts No. 7 (
Collegiate Baseball Newspaper Division II Top 30) Rollins College on Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Drysdale Field.
