ST. AUGUSTINE – Flagler College built a 2-0 lead and held on in the end to earn its first win of the season, 2-1, over Georgia College & State University in a Peach Belt Conference baseball game on a sun-splashed Sunday afternoon at Drysdale Field.
Flagler improved to 1-12 overall and 1-5 in the Peach Belt. Georgia College dropped to 3-8 overall and 2-1 in conference play.
The Saints scored first as
Jaxson Wentworth and
Trey Newland hit doubles in the third inning. Newland drove Went worth home with his double.
In the fifth,
Mason Gray was hit by a pitch, advanced to second on a ground ball, took third on a wild pitch and scored on
Taylor Clapp's single to left-center.
The Bobcats plated a run in the seventh and had runners at first and second base with one out, but could not score the equalizer.
Dylan Faulkner (1-1) allowed one run on five hits in six innings of work to earn the wins.
Gabriel Partridge tossed a scoreless ninth to pick up the save.
Newland went 2-for-4 with a double and one run batted in.
Davis Swenson (0-2) started and lasted four innings. He allowed one run on five hits with four strikeouts.
Palmer Sapp finished 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored. Ben Tuten singled twice.
