ST. AUGUSTINE – Flagler College starter
Gage Voorhees (0-1) retired 12-of-the-first-13 batters he faced, but Georgia College & State University had just enough to escape with a 2-0 win in a Peach Belt Conference baseball game Friday night at Drysdale Field.
Georgia College improved to 2-7 overall and 1-0 in the Peach Belt. Flagler is now 0-11 and 0-4 in conference play.
The Bobcats took the lead in the sixth as Ethan Cowan led off with a single and took second and a sacrifice bunt. Two batters later, Brandon Bellflower hit a single up the middle to score Cowan.
That would be all that Josh Hudgins (1-0) would need. He tossed seven scoreless innings and allowed just two hits, walked a batter and struck out seven. John Raines finished the game and struck out five batters.
GCSU added an unearned run in the eighth. The Bobcats had runners at first and second and Bellflower hit a ground ball to the Flagler first baseman, who threw to second for the force out, but the throw to first base skipped away and allowed the runner, who started at second base, to score.
Voorhees tossed eight innings, scattered seven hits, allowed one earned run and struck out eight.
Tim Kudlinski and
Griffin Garcia had the only hits for the Saints.
Seven different Bobcats had hits.
The same two teams meet tomorrow at 2 p.m. at Drysdale Field.
