COLUMBUS, Ga. –No. 4 (
Collegiate Baseball Division II Top 40) Columbus State withstood a ninth inning rally by Flagler College for a 7-4 win in a Peach Belt Conference baseball game Sunday afternoon at Burger King Stadium at Ragsdale Field.
Columbus State extended its winning streak to nine games and improved to 9-1 overall and 3-0 in the Peach Belt. Flagler is now 0-10 overall and 0-3 in conference play.
The Cougars broke a 1-all tie with a two-run third inning thanks to back-to-back RBI singles by Will Wilbanks and Win Johns. Columbus State added single tallies in the fourth and sixth innings before plating two in the eighth to take a 7-2 lead.
The Saints started a rally in the ninth when
Mason Gray and
Trey Newland led off with walks. Gray scored on a double by Cade Kresak and Newland crossed home plate on a groundout.
Peyton Burton (2-0) allowed one run and he scattered seven hits over 6.1 innings pitched to earn the win.
Johns went 2-for-4 with a home run and two runs batted in. Trace Twardoski went 2-for-4 with a solo home run.
Seth Wysocki (0-2) allowed five runs on 11 hits in 5.1 innings to pick up the loss.
Ashton Thomas led the Saints going 2-for-4 with a solo home run. Gray and
Matthew Burke each collected two singles.
Flagler opens its home schedule this weekend with Georgia College & State University. The first game is on Friday at 6 p.m. at Drysdale Field.
