Figueroa’s basket with 22 seconds left propels Saints past Warriors

ANDERSON, S.C. – Omar Figueroa sank a jumper with 22 seconds left to go to put Flagler College ahead for good and helped lead the team to 93-90 victor over Southern Wesleyan University in a Southeast Region Crossover Tournament game Sunday afternoon at the Abney Athletic Center.

Flagler evened its overall record at 1-1 while Southern Wesleyan remained winless at 0-2.

The Saints led by as many as 18 points (55-37) early in the second half, but the Warriors chipped away and tied the game at 80 with 4:56 left to go.

Southern Wesleyan took a six-point lead (88-82) after a pair of free throws with 2:08 remaining. A pair of Jax Bouknight free throws and a dunk by Jalen Barr got Flagler to within a basket (88-86) with 95 seconds left.

A basket by Raevon Allen pushed the Warriors lead back to four (90-86), but Figueroa sank a three-pointer and then his jumper put the Saints ahead for good. Barr sank a pair of free throws with three seconds left to finish the game.

Malik Bryant scored 20 of his game-high 24 points in the first half. He was one of six Flagler players to score in double figures. Figueroa finished with 18 points and had three steals. Bouknight, Destin Clark, Spencer Bain, and Kyle Young all had 10 points. Barr grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds and Bouknight led with five assists.

Flagler made 17-of-22 from the free throw line and sank 10 three-pointers, led by Figueroa with four.

Aaron Tims led Southern Wesleyan with 18 points. Eric Hackett came off the bench to provide 17. Smith added 15 points and eight rebounds.

Southern Wesleyan made 61.8 percent (21-34) of its shots from the field in the second half.

Flagler hosts Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University on Thursday at 7 p.m. at Flagler Gym.
