ORLANDO, Fla. – Flagler College finished their day at the South Region crossover with a five set win over University of West Alabama (23-25, 20-25, 25-18, 25-23, 15-7) after falling in four sets to Shorter University (20-25, 20-25, 29-27, 18-25) on Saturday at the Game Point Events Center.
Colby Stempkowski and Jordan Berglin led the Saints with 10 kills each. Stempkowski hit .364 in the match off of 22 swings with only two errors and added six blocks. Audrey Simmons posted a season high 7 blocks to add to her 6 kills and .211 hitting percentage. On the defensive side, Edie Lamoreaux dug up 28 balls while Molly Boyd put up a big block with 9 blocks.
As a team, the Saints posted 61 digs, 36 kills, 15 total blocks and 10 service aces.
Victoria Sparks led the Hawks with 10 kills and 5 aces. Marysa Ocampo and Amelia Thro added to the offense with 20 assists apiece.
In the nightcap, Berglin once again posted 10 kills and one dig away from a double-double, with nine digs. Lainee Mack led with 30 assists and pushed the offense to some strong numbers, while posting 7 kills of her own. The middle hitter duo of Grace Fleming and Molly Boyd put on a show, Boyd hit .643 with 9 kills on an errorless effort and Fleming hit .417 with 6 kills on 12 swings with only one error. Cecilia Robert added 9 kills and hit .412 for the Saints.
Flagler had 13 aces against the Tigers with four athletes getting two aces each and Lamoreaux adding three of her own to the mix.
The Saints fell in the first two sets of the match, fighting for a comeback in reverse sweep fashion. Set three started with an early 9-4 lead that was pushed to 17-9, after a seven point run by the Saints. The set ended after three straight points for Flagler, one being an ace from Robert and the other being a kill from Fleming to end it.
Set four was a close one with the Tigers taking the lead at 10-6, but a timeout for the Saints switched momentum that put them back in the lead at 14-10 after eight straight points. A big block from Simmons and Boyd gave the Saints set point and Boyd ended it with a kill. Flagler kept their momentum moving in the fifth set with a 7-1 lead and did not stop, finishing the final set 15-7.
Ally Craig led the Tigers with 10 kills, 8 digs and 6 aces.
Flagler will return home to face Augusta University on Oct. 27 at 6 p.m. at Flagler Gymnasium.
