ORANGEBURG, S.C. –
Jaiden Warde and
Ashton Thomas went a combined 7-for-10 with three runs scored and three runs batted in as Flagler College defeated Claflin University 7-2 in a Peach Belt Conference baseball game Friday night at Historic Mirmow Field.
Flagler improved to 21-23 overall and 13-9 in the Peach Belt. Claflin dropped to 4-24 overall and 0-22 in conference play.
The Saints jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead on
John Fiorenza's RBI single in the first inning and then
Luke Welborn had a two-run single in the third to stretch the lead to 3-0.
Flagler erupted for a three-run fifth inning as Thomas drove in a run with a base hit and Warde followed with a two-run double to right-center.
That would be plenty of run support for Saints' starter
Gage Voorhees (6-1). He fanned eight batters in eight innings and allowed two runs on six hits.
Davian Garcia finished up the ninth.
Warde collected a career-high four hits, which included a double, and he added two RBI and scored a run. Thomas hit three singles, scored two runs and drove in another.
Mason Gray went 2-for-4 with a double and he scored a pair of runs.
Kyle Hawkins (1-9) took the loss for the Panthers. He allowed seven runs, six of those were earned, on 11 hits in seven innings.
Da'Avion Sumpter and Joshua Cooper each collected two singles.
The same two teams meet tomorrow in a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
