Warde and Gray power Saints to a doubleheader sweep

ORANGEBURG, S.C. – Jaiden Warde and Mason Gray went a combined 12-for-18 with nine runs scored and seven runs batted in as Flagler College swept a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader from Claflin University, 17-6 and 13-8, Saturday afternoon at Historic Mirmow Field.

Flagler evened its overall record to 23-23 and improved to 15-9 in the Peach Belt. Claflin dropped to 4-26 overall and 0-24 in conference play.

In the opener, the Saints sent 10 men to the plate in the fifth inning and scored six runs on four hits to erase a 4-0 deficit. Ashton Thomas, Warde and Matthew Burke hit back-to-back-to-back doubles, each producing at least one run. Thomas drove in two with his two-bagger. Tyler Keith hit a two-run double in the same frame.

Trey Newland hit a solo home run in Flagler's two-run sixth and then the Saints erupted for an eight-run eighth inning where they sent 13 men to the plate. The game was stopped at the end of the eighth inning due to the 10-run rule.

Dylan Faulkner (3-4) was credited with the win. He allowed two runs on four hits in three innings of relief. Ryan Franklin tossed two scoreless innings to finish the game. Seth Wysocki started and surrendered four runs on five hits in three innings.

Warde led the 17-hit attack for Flagler. He went 3-for-4 with a double, four RBI, and he scored two runs. Keith finished with three RBI. Thomas drove in three runs and scored two more. Gray collected a pair of singles, scored three runs, drove in a run, and stole a base.

Talmon Hubbard (1-2) took the loss on the hill for Claflin. He was tagged for six runs on nine hits in 4 2/3 innings.

Quinten Kinard went 2-for-4 with a double and he drove in a run.

In the second game, Flagler scored all 13 runs in the last four innings.

The Saints trailed 3-0, but a two-run triple by Burke in the fourth got the offense going.

The Panthers scored a run in the bottom of the fourth to take a 4-2 lead, but Flagler answered in the fifth.

Warde tied the game with a double to center and then Burke and Donovan Garcia added back-to-back RBI singles to give the Saints the lead for good.

Luke Welborn added a two-run double in the sixth inning and John Fiorenza ripped a two-run double in the seventh.

Gabriel Partridge (4-4) tossed 5 1/3 innings and allowed six runs on 11 hits with seven strikeouts. Anthony Nofi and Brad Vondruska closed out the game.

Gray led the Saints offense with four singles and he scored two runs along with stealing a base. Fiorenza went 3-for-4 with two doubles, two RBI and he scored three runs. Warde went 3-for-5 with a double, two runs scored and two runs batted in. Burke finished with a single, a triple, a run scored, and three RBI.

Charles Jackson (0-8) allowed six runs on 11 hits for Claflin.

Kinard went 2-for-4 with a double and four RBI.

Flagler plays its final non-conference game of the regular season on Wednesday at Valdosta State University at 6 p.m.
