ST. AUGUSTINE – Flagler College scored 23 runs and pounded out 27 hits in a doubleheader sweep of Augusta University, 12-2 and 11-1, Saturday afternoon at Drysdale Field.
Flagler swept the Peach Belt Conference opening series and evened its overall record to 9-9. The last time the Saints swept the Jaguars was Feb. 18-19, 2012. Augusta drops to 6-10.
The Saints had six hitters hit .400 or better today and the pitching staff held Augusta to a .229 batting average and posted a 1.93 earned run average.
In the opener, Flagler scored at least one run in each of the last five innings. Back-to-back run-scoring singles by
Trey Newland and
Mason Gray in the fourth gave the Saints a 3-1 lead.
Donovan Garcia added a two-run single in the seventh while Newland ended the game with a two-run double to left field in the eighth and the game was stopped for the 10-run rule.
Seth Wysocki (2-2) scattered five hits and allowed one run over seven innings of work to pick up the win.
Jake Hill worked an inning in relief.
Newland led the 16-hit attack going 3-for-5 with a double, three runs scored and three runs batted in. Garcia collected three singles, drove in two runs and scored another.
Matthew Burke had two singles, a double, and he scored three runs.
Mason Gray,
Luke Welborn, and
Tyler Keith each hit a pair of singles. Both Gray and Keith scored two runs and knocked in another while Welborn had three RBI.
Charlie Horton (2-2) took the loss for the Jaguars. He allowed six runs on 11 hits in 5 1/3 innings pitched.
Kyle LaRoche collected a pair of singles for Augusta.
In game two, Flagler got a pair of early runs and scored at least a run in every inning except one.
Newland led off with a double and later scored on a ground out to put the Saints on the board. Welborn knocked in the other run with a double down the left field line.
The next six runs for Flagler were aided by Augusta miscues.
Ashton Thomas hit a bases clearing double in the fourth to put the Saints ahead 8-0.
Gabriel Partridge (1-2) received the win in relief after tossing 2 1/3 innings. He allowed one run on four hits.
Ryan Ayrey started and went 2 2/3 innings.
Davian Garcia and
Anthony Nofi followed Partridge.
Thomas went 2-for-4 with the double and four RBI. Newland hit a single, a double, he scored two runs and drove in two more.
John Fiorenza added a pair of base hits and Burke collected two singles, scored two runs and he drove in another.
Donovan Garcia scored three runs.
Cotton Phillips (0-1) pitched one inning and allowed two runs on three hits to pick up the loss.
Walker Sinclair hit a pair of singles for the Jaguars.
Flagler hosts the University of North Georgia next weekend for a three-game conference series. The first game is Friday at 6 p.m. at Drysdale Field.
