ST. AUGUSTINE –
Gage Voorhees and
Dylan Faulkner combined to strike out 16 batters as Flagler College defeated No. 25 (
Collegiate Baseball Newspaper Division II Top 25) University of North Georgia 6-3 in a Peach Belt Conference baseball game Saturday evening at Drysdale Field.
Flagler won its fourth game in a row and improved to 10-9 overall and 4-0 in the Peach Belt. North Georgia dropped to 12-7 overall and 2-2 in conference play.
Voorhees (3-1) tossed 5 2/3 innings and allowed three runs on two hits with eight strikeouts. He did walk seven batters and hit another.
Faulkner finished the game and struck out an additional eight batters with three walks to pick up his first save of the season. He did not allow a hit.
The Saints got behind early, 2-0 in after the top of the first inning, but got single tallies in the first and second innings. An error by the North Georgia third baseman allowed
Luke Welborn score all the way from first base to give Flagler the lead.
Jaiden Warde followed with a two-run home run over the left field wall to push the lead to 5-2. Warde went 3-for-4 as he added a double.
Flagler tacked on another run in the fourth.
Trey Newland went 2-for-4 with a double, a run scored, and he drove in a run.
Ashton Thomas went 2-for-4 with a double and one run batted in.
Cade Heil (3-2) lasted 4 1/3 innings and he surrendered five earned runs on nine hits.
Crews Taylor and Nik Levensteins each hit a single for the Nighthawks. Taylor drew a pair of walks and scored two runs.
The same two teams meet in a noon doubleheader to wrap up the series.
