EDMOND, Okla. — The first day of ITA Indoor Nationals is in the books.
In a tough matchup between the ninth-ranked, eighth-seeded Flagler College women's tennis team and top-ranked, top-seeded Barry University Saturday at the Edmond Center Court, the Bucs clinched the 4-0 victory to advance in the winner's bracket.
The Saints will face the 12th-ranked, fifth-seeded University of West Florida Sunday at 8 a.m. central after the Argos (0-1) fell to the University of West Alabama, 4-0, before the Saints' match.
Flagler (1-3) fiercely competed with the nation's best team and never backed down, despite leaving on the losing end. Before being called due to wins on court three and one, respectively,
Alessandra Traub and
Anika Nissen were on the verge of pulling out a win on court two.
Nissen, the No. 4 singles player, took the momentum into her match as she was the lone Saint to win a set. The senior lost the second set and ended up not finishing due to matches being completed on courts six, one and five to clinch for the Bucs. Of those,
Alice Benvegnu,
Luisa Hrda, and
Florencia Massardo Brain finished, while Traub, Nissen and Schlagenhauf were grinding out their matches when the match was called.
Sixth-ranked Hrda faced off with the nation's best player in Deniz Khazan as the junior was edged, 6-3 and 6-0, in the second singles' match completed.
