ST. AUGUSTINE –
Myles Colangelo's walk-off single to right field gave Flagler College a 5-4 victory over Saint Leo University in a non-conference baseball game Friday night at Drysdale Field.
Flagler evened its record at 2-2 while Saint Leo dropped to 4-2.
The Saints trailed 4-3 going into the home half of the ninth. The Lions turned to Jestin Jones (1-1) to close out the game, but he gave up a lead-off double to
Trey Newland and then pinch hitter
Ashton Thomas hit a line drive off Jones' foot that wound up in front of first baseman Adrien Roa. By the time Roa got control of the ball, Newland was halfway down the third base line, and he just beat Roa's throw to the plate to tie the score.
Bryce Fitzgerald came into run for Thomas and Jones was lifted for Devin Blair.
Donovan Garcia bunted Fitzgerald to second, and a couple pitches later, he advanced to third on a wild pitch. After a strikeout, that's when Colangelo laced the first pitch he saw into right to end the game.
Jake Hill (1-0) tossed three scoreless innings in relief and allowed just one hit. He struck out two batters.
Gage Voorhees started and scattered five hits and allowed one earned run over six innings of work.
Jaiden Warde hit a double and a solo home run to pace the Saints. Garcia hit a two-run double in the seventh to pull Flagler to within a run.
Roa went 2-for-3 with a solo home run in the fifth for the Lions. Bobby Sparling blasted a three-run homer in the sixth to give Saint Leo a 4-1 lead.
Jared Beck, a 7-foot-tall southpaw, started and allowed one run on one hit over 5 2/3 innings. He struck out 12 batters. However, it was Jones who took the loss after he allowed two runs on two hits in the ninth.
The same two teams meet in a doubleheader at Drysdale Field at 1 p.m. tomorrow.
