WINGATE, N.C. –
Kennedy Muff recorded her ninth double-double of the season with 31 assists and 10 digs as Flagler College swept (27-25, 25-22, 25-21) Carson-Newman University in the first quarterfinal of the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional Friday afternoon at Cuddy Arena.
Flagler, the No. 6 seed, improved to 19-9 overall while Carson-Newman, the No. 3 seed, had its season end with a 27-6 mark.
Muff added seven kills and hit .312 in the match.
Logan Garcia added eight kills on 13 errorless swings for a sizzling .615 hitting percentage. She tacked on five total blocks to her line.
Cecilia Robert contributed nine kills while
Jordan Berglin just missed a double-double with nine kills and 10 digs.
Molly Boyd had seven kills and four total blocks.
Edie Lamoreaux collected 17 digs and had three aces.
Skylor Weaver led the Eagles with nine kills on 13 errorless swings for a .692 hitting percentage. Julia Wheeler added eight kills and Emmagrace Cobb finished with eight kills and five total blocks. Abbey Hildenbrand tallied 27 assists and Hayden Barton had 20 digs.
The first set of the match saw 15 ties and nine lead changes. With the Saints leading 25-24, the Eagles broke the first set point thanks to a hitting error by Flagler. Robert's kill gave the Saints a 26-25 lead and Berglin ended the set with a kill of her own.
Flagler went on a 5-1 run in the second set to break open an 11-all score and never trailed the rest of the way. Berglin and Garcia capped the run with a double-block on Cobb's attack attempt to give the Saints a 16-12 lead. The Eagles fought off two set points until Robert's kill gave the Saints a 2-0 lead in the match.
The third set saw 11 ties and seven lead changes. An
Audrey Simmons kill tied the set at 17 and sparked a 3-0 spurt to give the Saints enough separation to go on and win the match. Kills by Garcia and Berglin finished the match.
Flagler advances to the semifinal round where it will face the winner of the Augusta University-UNC Pembroke match tomorrow at 5 p.m.
