Women’s tennis opens fall season at ERAU Open

DAYTONA BEACH – The Flagler College women's tennis opened the fall season this weekend with the Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University Open, which was held at the Crotty Tennis Center.

Rain eliminated one day's worth of tennis, but singles players were able to play three matches and doubles teams were able to get two matches in.

Paloma Martinez, Anika Nissen, and Eden Schlagenhauf all went 3-0 in singles play while Camila Ramazzini, Felicitas Runkel, and Lixin Wang went 2-0 in doubles play.

Martinez played in the Blue Flight and opened with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Isabella Diaz of Eastern Florida State College. She followed with a 7-6(5), 6-4 win over Karen Romero of Bethune-Cookman University before finishing with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Mafalda Soares of Embry-Riddle.

Nissen started out playing in the Blue Flight and swept Soares 6-4, 6-3. She cruised past Diaz 6-1, 6-0 and was moved to the Gold Flight on Sunday. Nissen rolled to a 6-4, 6-1 triumph over Roberta Krvajica of Embry-Riddle.

Schlagenhauf played exclusively in the Gold Flight. The freshman coasted to a 6-3, 6-1 win over Georgina Wood of Embry-Riddle. On Saturday, she played a marathon match against Valeria Arevalo of Eastern Florida State winning 1-6, 6-3, 13-11. Schlagenhauf finished on Sunday with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Shaeda Nickle of Eastern Florida State.

In doubles play, Ramazzini teamed with Lixin Wang on Friday to best an independent tandem of Soares and Gonzalez, 8-2. On Sunday, Ramazzini was paired with Alessandra Traub and the defeated Krvajica and Wood 8-7(3).

Runkel and Martinez opened doubles play with an 8-4 win over Arevalo and Nickle. Today, Runkel and Nissen defeated Diaz and Zoe Hanson of Eastern Florida State, 8-1.

Wang picked up her second doubles win of the tournament this afternoon when she was teamed with Schlagenhauf. The posted an 8-2 win over Michelle Neube and Romero of Bethune-Cookman.
