Box Score 2 VALDOSTA, Ga. – For the third consecutive season, Flagler College and Valdosta State University split a doubleheader. This time the Blazers took the opener 7-4, but the Saints captured the second game 3-1 Thursday evening at Steel's Diamond.
Flagler leaves with a 7-2 overall record and Valdosta State, ranked No. 18 (NFCA Division II Top 25) in the country, is now 10-2.
In the nightcap,
Katlyn McCue (4-1) went the distance and scatted four hits to earn the win. She allowed one run, walked three and struck out four. McCue induced 14 fly outs. She retired 10 of the last 11 batters in the game.
The Saints took advantage of a Blazer miscue in the third inning to score two unearned runs. After
Megan Miller led off the inning with an infield single
Garland Evans (2-4, 2R) followed by reaching on a dropped fly ball in center field. A fly out advanced Miller to third. Two batters later,
Natalie Murphy singled down the left field line to give Flagler a 1-0 lead.
Tatum Morgan followed with a single to left field and got into a rundown allowing Evans to steal home.
In the seventh, Evans hit a one-out double to right field and scored on
Maria Kappos' sacrifice fly to right.
Cassey Cornelius hit a solo homer in the fourth for the Blazers.
Kasie Johnson (0-1) took the loss in the circle for the Blazers. She tossed three-plus innings and surrendered five hits as well as two unearned runs.
In the opener, Valdosta State used a six-run third inning and held on to win 7-4.
The Blazers sent 11 batters to the plate in the inning and had five batters reach on a walk. Taylor Hartenbach got the deluge started with an RBI double. Later, Lacey Crandall and Danielle Patterson added run-scoring singles.
Flagler rallied for three runs in the seventh, but could not get any closer. Miller hit an RBI double and Evans followed with a two-run single.
Kathryn Carter (4-0) tossed 6 2/3 innings, scattered 10 hits and allowed four runs. Ashtin Strickland earned her first save of the season as she retired the only batter she faced.
Hartenbach went 2-for-4 with a double, one run batted in and a run scored. Patterson collected two singles, scored a run and drove in another.
Ally Marcano (3-1) took the loss for Flagler. She tossed 2 1.3 innings, allowed three hits and six runs. Marcano walked seven batters. McCue tossed the final 3 2/3 innings and allowed three hits as well as one run.
Evans collected two singles and drove in two runs.
Morgan Murphy and
Jaclyn Mijuskovic each hit two singles and scored a run.
Flagler heads to Melbourne, Florida to play in the Florida Tech Softball Classic (Feb. 17-18). The Saints open with No. 22 St. Mary's University at 12:30 p.m. at Dr. Nancy Bottge Field.
