Box Score ST. AUGUSTINE –
Natalie Murphy hit a walk off double to center field to lead Flagler College to a 3-2 win over the University of West Alabama in a non-conference softball game at Flagler Field.
Flagler remains undefeated at 3-0 while West Alabama, a member of the Gulf South Conference, dropped to 3-4.
Maria Kappos got the bottom of the seventh started with a two-out single to center field. Murphy then socked the first pitch she saw to end the game, scoring Kappos.
The Saints got on the board first with single tallies in the first two innings. Kappos hit an RBI double in the first inning and
Garland Evans added an RBI single in the second.
Haylie Best got West Alabama going in the fifth with an RBI double. Later, Abby McKee scored on a wild pitch to knot the game at 2-all.
Katlyn McCue (2-0) came on to pitch in the fifth inning with a 2-1 lead and runners at first and second. She allowed one inherited runner to score, but tossed three scoreless innings and allowed one hit. McCue walked three and had one strikeout. She threw the wild pitch that allowed the game-tying run.
Ally Marcano started and tossed four-plus innings. She allowed two hits and two runs, walked five and fanned two.
Kappos led the offense going 3-for-4, with the double, a run scored and one run batted in. Evans collected two singles and drove in a run while
Natalie Murphy went 2-for-4 with the double.
Andrea Edmonds (1-3) picked up the loss in relief for the Tigers. She worked 5 2/3 innings in relief, scattered eight hits, allowed one run and struck out four batters.
Kierra Hague, along with Best, hit a double.
The Tigers were limited to three hits.
Flagler and West Alabama tangle again tomorrow (Feb. 10) at 10 a.m. and the Saints follow with a game against Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University at noon in the South/Southeast Region Crossover. Other scores from the day were North Georgia 4, West Alabama 1 and then North Georgia downed Embry-Riddle 1-0 in nine innings.
