Nowotny and Fustagno selected to all-region teams

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Flagler College sophomore forward Charlene Nowotny and senior forward Fio Fustagno were selected to the United Soccer Coaches (USC) Division II All-Southeast Region teams, according to a release Tuesday (Nov. 28) evening.

Nowotny was selected to the first-team while Fustagno earned her second-consecutive all-region honor, but this time it was a second-team selection. Last year, Fustagno was a third-team honoree.

"I am delighted that Char and Fio have been recognized in the all-region teams as they both had a wonderful season," said fourth-year head coach Ashley Martin. "Knowing them as I do, I know that they will give their teammates credit for their success, and rightfully so. I'm so happy for both of them and it just adds to how special this 2017 season has been."

Nowotny was selected to the D2CCA All-Southeast Region earlier in the month and was a first-team All-Peach Belt Conference member. The Marburg, Germany native led the Saints with 16 goals, eight assists and 40 points. The goals and points marks tied for second most in a season in the program's history and the assists tied for fifth. Nowotny scored nine game-winning goals. She was an academic all-conference honoree this past fall.

"Charlene is capable of producing moments of magic during game and is a player that I know the Flagler fans love to watch," added Martin.

Fustagno earned second-team all-conference honors this year and was a two-time PBC Player of the Week. The Asunción, Paraguay native was second on the team in goals (11), assists (7) and points (29). Fustagno finished in fifth place all-time in points (50) in her three-year career with the Saints.

"Fio has represented our team impeccably in her three years here," said Martin, "and I know her family is extremely proud of her achievements."

Flagler finished the season with a 16-3-2 overall record and a 7-1-2 mark in the Peach Belt. The 16 wins overall and the seven league wins are a program record. The Saints won their first NCAA Tournament match.
