JACKSONVILLE – Former Flagler College men's soccer star Joseph Toby (2009-12) signed with the Jacksonville Armada Football Club yesterday (Feb. 2) according to the team's web site.
The Armada is filling out its roster for their inaugural season in the North American Soccer League (NASL) which opens in April.
"I couldn't be any happier or grateful to have signed with the Jacksonville Armada FC," said Toby in a message posted on his Twitter account. "It is a dream come true to play in front of friends and family."
Toby was one of Flagler's most decorated players in the history of the program. He was a Daktronics first-team All-America selection in 2011 and was a three-time National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) All-Southeast Region selection. Toby was a three-time All-Peach Belt Conference selection and was named the conference's freshman of the year in 2009.
The native of Freetown, Sierra Leone via Samuel W. Wolfson High School in Jacksonville played in 80 career matches for the Saints with 77 starts primarily as a midfielder. He scored 25 goals and tallied 22 assists for a total of 72 points.
With the signing of Toby, the Armada has expanded its roster to 18 players.
"Joseph Toby brings solid potential to our club," said Armada FC General Manager Dario Sala, in the official release from the team. "He has a lot of the prototypical characteristics you look for in a defender. I look forward to seeing how he develops and contributes."
Toby spent 2014 playing for the USL PRO's Arizona United SC where he made 11 appearances. He also had brief stints with Orlando City SC (USL PRO) and IMG Academy Bradenton of the USL Premier Developmental League. Toby spent the 2012 season with the Orlando City U-23 team.
"This is a proud day for the Flagler men's soccer program as we add another professional to our list of former players," said head men's soccer coach
John Lynch. "I am confident Joseph will have a fantastic career as a pro and happy that he is playing at home in Jacksonville."
The Saints soccer program has produced five pros, including Toby: Paul Tomaro (Jacksonville Cyclones), Olafur Thor Gunnarsson (IA Akranes), Jon Johnson and Johan Bergfeld (Eskilstuna City, Sweden).
The Armada will play a friendly on Saturday (Feb. 7) against the Philadelphia Union of Major League Soccer at EverBank Field at 5 p.m.
