ST. AUGUSTINE – The Flagler College volleyball team will be hosting a Peach Belt Conference Tournament quarterfinal match on Tuesday (Nov. 17) at 7 p.m. at Flagler Gymnasium. Flagler, the No. 2 seed, will host No. 7 seed Augusta University.
Ticket prices will be different than regular home Flagler volleyball matches. Adults will be charged $7 and everyone else at $5. Children under 10 years of age will be admitted free along with and students from a Peach Belt Conference school with valid identification. All St. Johns County residents will have to pay the aforementioned prices for the match on Tuesday.
The winner of the Flagler-Augusta match will move on the PBC Tournament semifinals. The site is to be announced as it will be hosted by the highest remaining seed of the teams advancing out of the quarterfinal round. The University of South Carolina Aiken is the top seed in the tournament.
Flagler (20-7, 13-5 PBC) has fared well at home with an 11-3 record. The Saints picked up their 20
th win over the season last Friday over USC Aiken. That marked the 14
th time out of the last 15 seasons that Flagler has won 20 or more matches.
Sara Davis, the reigning PBC Freshman of the Year, is the focal point of the conference's defenses. She is second in the PBC in hitting percentage (.351), third in kills (357), fourth in kills per set (3.28) and ninth in solo blocks (13).
Megan Hooks has come on strong lately and gives second-year head coach
Matt Affolder another weapon in his arsenal. She is fifth in the conference in kills per set (3.00) and is sixth in total attempts (895). Feeding both Davis and Hooks is freshman setter
Tara Savisky. She leads the league in assists (1159) and assists per set (10.54).
The Saints won both matches against the Jaguars this season. Flagler won a marathon five-setter at Augusta, but dispatched a depleted Jaguar roster in four sets at Flagler Gym on Halloween. The Saints are 13-2 all-time against the Jaguars and is 7-0 at home. The last time these two teams met in the PBC Tournament was in 2010 at Savannah, Georgia where Flagler won 3-1.
Davis and Hooks led the Saints with 26 and 25 kills, respectively, in those two matches this season.
Caitlyn Kovach led the defense with 40 digs while Savisky tallied 89 assists. Davis and Kovach each had four service aces.
Ashley Cheewah recorded 10 total blocks.
Augusta (19-13, 8-10) has welcomed back setter Ashley Latham to the line-up. She missed the match at Flagler due to an injury. She missed a total of nine matches and the Jaguars posted a 2-7 record in that span. The Jaguars are 17-6 when she is in the line-up. Latham is second only to Savisky in assists per set (10.31). Cat DeSilvester is fifth in the PBC in digs (466) and is ninth in digs per set (4.31).
Rachel Windle and Kali Boatwright led the Jaguars with 16 kills apiece in the first two meetings between the two teams. Kailla Baptiste had another 15 kills. Latham tallied 43 assists in the match at Augusta on Oct. 2. Jordan Bickett and DeSilvester each had four aces.
