ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. − Flagler College and Lander University split a Peach Belt Conference softball doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Saints Field. Lander won the opener 1-0 in 11 innings and Flagler took game two 10-1 in five innings.

Flagler wrapped up its regular season with a 28-22 overall record and a 10-10 mark in the Peach Belt. Lander is now 19-19 overall and 5-9 in conference play.

In the opener, Marilyn Newman doubled to lead off the top of the 11th inning for the Bearcats. Natalie Smith followed by laying down a bunt which found an opening and allowed Newman to take third and Smith took first base. Smith then stole second base, but the throw was cut off short of the base. Flagler second base Kirsten Immel (Ocala, Fla./Vanguard HS) bobbled the throw and Newman scored on the miscue.

Hayley Leissner (13-4) of Lander went the distance in the circle. She allowed four hits, walked eight and struck out 12 on 204 pitches. Leissner retired the last 18-of-23 batters she faced. Only four Flagler players reached scoring position.

Newman singled and doubled for the Bearcats and Smith singled twice.

Kelly Riddick (Hampton, Fla./Central Florida CC) (17-11) tossed five innings in relief, allowed two hits, an unearned run and struck out eight batters. Sam Boatner (Auburndale, Fla./Polk CC) started and went four innings. She left the game in the bottom of the fourth when she fouled a ball that hit her in the face.Boatner allowed just one hit and fanned three. Jana Owen (St. Augustine, Fla./Florida CC-Jacksonville) tossed two scoreless innings and allowed one hit.

Brittney Hatem (Hialeah, Fla./Wallace CC-Dothan), Lauren Ely (Winter Springs, Fla./Winter Springs HS), Brittany Simmons (Ocala, Fla./Chattanooga State Tech CC) and Katherine Cabrera (Hialeah, Fla./Miami-Dade College) each singled for the Saints.

In the second game, Flagler erupted for four runs in the second inning and five more in the third en route to a 10-1 victory.

Stacy Piagno (St. Augustine, Fla./Pedro Menendez HS) socked a three-run home run to center field in the second inning while Heather Hill (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla./Indian River CC) hit a solo home run in the third.

Brandy Luke (Orlando, Fla./Indian River State College) and Simmons each collected two singles. Simmons drove in two runs.

Riddick (18-11) tossed four innings and allowed three hits and fanned four. Owen closed out the fifth inning and surrendered two hits and one run.

Ashley Proctor hit an RBI double in the fifth for Lander. Newman, Daisy Stewart, Casey Corbitt and Rachelle Adkins each singled.

Shelby Spencer (4-10) started and tossed two innings, allowed three hits and four runs.

Flagler will await the pairings to be announced for next weekend's Peach Belt Conference Tournament at Florence, S.C.

NOTE: Today was “Senior Day” at Flagler College. Seven seniors were honored prior to the start of the first game. Boatner, Cabrera, Hatem, Andy Hay (Land 'O Lakes, Fla./Polk CC), Hill, Lauren Jurco (Palm Harbor, Fla./Pasco-Hernando CC) and Owen are the first class of seniors in the history of the softball program, which started last year.
