ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. - Scott Mohr's two-run single and Ricky Torres' sacrifice fly in the first inning gave Mount Mercy College of Cedar Rapids, Iowa a lead it would not relinquish in a 9-6 win over Flagler College in a non-conference baseball game Wednesday night at Flagler Stadium.
Chris Jackson led off the inning with a ringing single to right-center. Anthony Valera ripped a single into left field that was bobbled allowing courtesy runner Derek Barker to go to third and Valera advanced to second. Mohr singled plating both runners and advanced to second on the throw to the plate. He would advance to third on a fly out and then score on Torres' sacrifice fly to center.
Glenn Kiture (Orlando, Fla./Edgewater HS) roped his fifth double in as many at bats in the home half of the first scoring
Chris Guerra (Fremont, Calif./Mount Mercy College).
The Saints pulled to within a run in the second after
Ben Floyd (Port St. Lucie, Fla./Brevard CC) singled in
Bryan Harrell (Granger, Ind./Lincoln Trail College).
The Mustangs would score a single run in the fourth and two more in the fifth, on Mike Wolf's two-run single to take a 6-2 lead.
Flagler would battle back to score three runs in the bottom of the fifth with the help of a bases loaded walk and a fielding error by the Mustang shortstop.
Brandon Bradley gave Mount Mercy some breathing room in the sixth when he belted a two-run homer to right to give the Mustangs an 8-5 lead.
Charlie Schuenemann (1-0) tossed six innings and allowed six hits and two earned runs for Mount Mercy (3-14). Derek Blaylock closed out the last 1.2 innings to pick up the save.
