Saints Drop a Pair on Day Two of Orediggers Volleyball Classic

GOLDEN, COLO. – The Saints get shut out by both Northern State and the host Colorado School of Mines on the second day of the Orediggers Volleyball Classic.

Flagler College vs. Northern State
Score: Northern State 3, Flagler 0 (22-25, 23-25, 22-25)
Location: Golden, Colo. (Lockridge Arena)
Records: Flagler 1-1, Northern State 1-0

The Short Story: Junior Marley Middlebrooks supplied 13 kills, but it wasn't enough to slow down Northern State at the Orediggers Volleyball Classic.
 
QUOTES FROM COACH
"Northern State is a very fundamentally sound team." Jeff Reynolds said. "They are very well coached and had a lot of success with their precision offense and outstanding defense."
"Our job is to understand that this loss does not define us; rather, we need to learn from this experience, individually and collectively." Reynolds said.
 
OPENING VOLLEY
  • Middlebrooks had another double-digit kill match with 37 attempts and added 11 receptions and served up one ace
  • Gia Lowe made 10 kills, while hitting .292 for the Saints
  • Setter, Jilly Young directed the offense with 21 assists with three kills
  • Katelyn Schroeder and Linnea Nesheim led the Wolves with 13 kills each
 
THE DIFFERENCE
  • Flagler fell behind in both kills (38-53) and digs (36-55). The Saints failed to hit above .200 for the entire match, meanwhile the Wolves hit .304.
  • Northern State also was four blocks ahead of Flagler (6-10)
  • All matches were neck-to-neck, but in the second set, the Saints were ahead 17-14 until the Wolves went on a four-kill run to tie it at 18-18, but they rattled off another seven kills to end the match.

Score: Colorado School of Mines 3, Flagler 0 (19-25, 23-25, 13-25)
Location: Golden, Colo. (Lockridge Arena)
Records: Flagler 1-2, Colorado School of Mines 3-0

The Short Story: The Saints were unable to make a comeback against the host Colorado School of Mines.
 
QUOTES FROM COACH
"We ran into some very good teams today and I think our team would agree we didn't play our best." Reynolds said. "It's still early in the season and these matches are helping us grow."
 
OPENING VOLLEY
  • Middlebrooks was able to collect 10 kills with 32 attempts, made seven digs, served up one ace and one block
  • Senior Gracie Fleming made nine kills with four blocks while hitting .227. Lowe killed eight times and knocked five blocks for the Saints
  • Young leading the Saints offense with 28 assists and nine digs
  • Caroline Walden led the Orediggers with 13 kills 
 
THE DIFFERENCE
  • The Saints were unable to get to a .200 hitting percentage, while the Orediggers were hitting a .367. We were out killed (33-44) and out blocked (6-12).
  • Colorado School of Mines also had five more aces than us (1-5)
  • In the second set, the Saints were ahead 16-12, but after a six kill-run the Orediggers were able to tie up the game 18-18
  • The Orediggers ended up winning the set off of a kill and attacking error
 
NEXT UP
The Saints will face Rockhurst University at 11 a.m. (MT) at the Lockridge Arena in Golden, Colo. for the last day of the Orediggers Volleyball Classic.
